And with there help the nation has got its first top three cooks who will fight for the coveted title of becoming the first ever Master Chef India and win the cash prize of one crore rupees. The duo talks about their experience so far. What has the level of competition been like? Kunal: I am pleasantly surprised with the kind of contestants we managed to scoop out from the crowd of more than a thousand applicants. The amateurs who have till now cooked within the secured walls of their houses or probably a small joint, have now transformed into some serious chefs. I am elated to see the potential of the contestants. Ajay: I think the talent right from the beginning of the show till now has taken a huge leap. It's pleasing to see the amateurs behave like a pro under pressure and demanding situations. It's not just about winning the prize money of one crore and the title but to learn and grasp as much as you can throughout the show and the contestants were serious about learning on the show. Since the beginning of the show, do you feel that each of the participants has the ability to become a renowned chef? Kunal: When we had started, I was in double minds about the selection of the contestants. I was always wondering if we have got the right kind of participants who will be dedicated enough to learn new things on the show and if they deserve to become the country's first MasterChef. But as we progressed we could register the growth of the contestants. Their tremendous growth has been a surprise to all of us. Both Ajay and I are pleased to see them grow on the show as we have given our best to groom and prepare them. Ajay: I won't say all of them had the caliber but certainly six or seven of them have managed to impress me. They have got a fair understanding and the idea behind the show and winning the title. They didn't just fancy the idea of winning the title but also respected and worked towards the fact that to win the title you need to groom yourself and hone your talent on the show and that it is a serious job. Do you feel that any of the participants have the ability to go and become internationally acclaimed chefs? Kunal: Well why not, sky is the limit for them now. They have accomplished the step one of the plan successfully by participating in MasterChef India and they can march ahead in their career by participating in international shows. All they need is a little more effort, persistence and dedication. The advantage with us is that we can prepare authentic Indian cuisine which I am sure the International chefs would find it difficult to prepare. Ajay: I don't deem it fit to comment on it just now. I think the Master Chef India have a long way to go as yet. The exposure they have got through this show is on the national level and they need to learn a lot to participate in an International reality show. The finalists are here because they are the best in India. What, according to you, would be their strong and weak points? Kunal: The format of Master Chef India have prepared them for the worst possible scenario. Every task here was unexpected so they know how to handle the pressure. The only weakness is the limited knowledge of the variety of cuisines. They need to travel a lot to learn and understand various cuisines, culture and taste across the globe to become a chef who is able to match upto international standard. Ajay: The best part about Pankaj is that she is mixes method with creativity to come up with amazing dishes and Jaynandan is very creative with his cooking. What was the best and worst dish you tasted on the show? Kunal: I think best dish is yet to come which I am sure would be served during the finale and the worst was during the audition round when a guy named Charanjeet had served us some chakna which he claimed to be hit among his friends. Ajay: Best dish was the outcome of the team effort by Joe Bath and Pankaj Bhadouria and the worst was Archana's biriyani. You’re normally praised or criticized for cooking a dish. How was the experience being on the other side on Master Chef? Kunal: There was a huge responsibility on us to unearth the best of the lot to be crowned as the first ever Master Chef of India. It's easy to criticize but you can't ignore your responsibility. You have to guide the contestants in a way that they don't feel criticized and let down. I might come across as rude at times but that's for their benefit Ajay: Well there can be two side to it. I don't know if I was judging or getting judged. I only thought of doing my job in the best way possible. Which was the moment that stood out on Master Chef India? Kunal: My best moment would be the Diwali challenge task. The contestants were asked to prepare Indian sweets and all the khoya was exhausted. Pritesh couldn't manage to get khoya and considering it is the most important ingredient in any Indian mithai, he was exasperated. Joe Bath irrespective of the fact that they are competing against each other came out to offer him some khoya from his share. It was a truly amazing sight for all of us. Ajay: The day when Jaynandan and Radhicka made the nearly perfect ghewar cake during a task remains to be the outstanding moment for me from the show. Whose eviction took you by surprise the most? Kunal: Joe Bath's for he is a nice guy and an equally good cook. Ajay: It has to be Joe Bath as he was not even half baked when he had entered in the show but has come a long way. I was a bit disappointed when he had to leave the show just few weeks before the finale. Who do you think had grown as a chef along with the show? Kunal: Jaynandan has improved a lot on the show. Imagine a guy who makes kathi roll at a joint to be able to make almost all the cuisines in absolutely no time. He is quite an under-dog of the show. Ajay: My pick would be Jaynandan an average cook who just knew to slice onions now has an impeccable understanding of flavours and cooking techniques.
